11:09pm and just wrapping up my work day. Some people say I work too much. Hey, my wife and son are enjoying some vacay time in Hawaii, so Im sitting in my kitchen, working on a new sales script, editing... editing... re-editing. It reminds me of The Good Ole Days when I was single, and I would work until midnight every night, 7 days a week. I know that sounds obsessive to most people... but let me ask you this... What the heck do most single people do between 7pm and midnight when they get home from work? Watch TV sitcoms? Do mindless, non-productive activities that yield NOTHING of any value in life? Thats 5 hours a night. Thats 25 hours a week. Thats 100 hours a month. Thats over 1,200 hours a year. If you dont have the lifestyle you REALLY want, why are you watching mindless TV? You could spend that time doing something to better yourself. So you may be asking yourself, Well then why does Darren still work this many hours? Well, I DONT... usually. I have responsibilities as a father and as a husband, and so I typically dont work from 7pm - midnight every night. But tonight, Im home alone, so I can do it and its not cutting into family time. Ill also often wake up early in the morning and work from 4am - 6am before my family wakes up, which doesnt cut into family time either. Thats 2 hours a day. Thats 10 hours a week. Thats 520 hours a year. You get the picture. But still... the question begs... why do I STILL work this hard... even though in theory, I really dont HAVE to work this hard anymore? The answer is quite simple. I have over 50 people who are counting on me to produce jaw-dropping content so that they can become successful too. Over 50 people... some of whom have families that are counting on them to build a great career and a great lifestyle for them to enjoy. Over 50 people Ive made commitments to, to help them achieve their goals and their dreams. Now, Id be lying if I told you I didnt also desire to achieve more for myself and my own family. Im just built that way. Driven. But I will tell you that once you have the money, power, status and all that crap, you will find that the greatest joy you will experience in life is to contribute toward other peoples lives. To give them opportunities. To empower them. And so I take that part of my life very seriously. So my advice to you is this... Ask yourself, Who is counting on me? Maybe its your kids. Maybe its your spouse. Maybe its your parents. Maybe its your friends. Maybe its your employees. Maybe its orphans in Mexico. Maybe its a non-profit organization. Maybe its your church. What Ive found is that most people will do more to not let someone down thats counting on them... often times even more so than what theyd do for themselves. Ill bet youre no different. So work hard... not for the money. Not for the power. Not for the fame and fortune or bullshit status. Work hard because you have people counting on you. Dont let them down.
