11/12/2013 I forgot to mention to those of you who werent in class 11/10, that the plan for 11/17 is that the teens and pre-teens have an opportunity to share their testimonies in small family groups. Please see the attached resource for convenience. Paul introduces why he was accused by the Jews Acts 26:1-7 So Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.” Then Paul stretched out his hand and made his defense: 2 “I consider myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I am going to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews, 3 especially because you are familiar with all the customs and controversies of the Jews. Therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently. 4 “My manner of life from my youth, spent from the beginning among my own nation and in Jerusalem, is known by all the Jews. 5 They have known for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion I have lived as a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand here on trial because of my hope in the promise made by God to our fathers, 7 to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king! Comments / Questions: - Although we may think of Pharisees in a negative way, or as hypocrites, their reputation among men was a group who strictly adhered to the Law given by God to Moses. When Paul identified himself with this group it was an honorable thing in the eyes of man, especially the Sanhedrin. - Notice that Paul mentions the “twelve tribes” in present tense. This is a rebuttal to those who say ten of the tribes were lost when the northern kingdom of Israel split off from the Judah and Benjamin. In reality, a remnant of each of the ten tribes came back and settled in the southern kingdom over time. - Paul is anchoring his claim that it is valid to believe in the man Jesus, in the Old Testament writings. - He goes further to say the twelve tribes have the same hope as he does, except they missed the fulfillment. - How does my hope in Jesus, His coming and resurrection in Him affect my life today? Philippians 3:5 Circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; ESV Galatians 1:13-14 For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. 14 And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. ESV Galatians 3:17-18 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. ESV Genesis 15:5-6 And He [THE LORD] brought him [Abraham] outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then He said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness.
