11/17: Balboa Update Balboa was due to be euthanized today, but we couldnt do it. Fortunately, we had a little kennel space available to allow us to make this decision. While we know hes not feeling well at all, he showed us spirit that made us decide to keep fighting for him. Our plan is to hold him until Wednesday, but if his health takes a turn or space jams up, he could be put down earlier, so we are hoping to find a rescue for him ASAP! He MUST go to a rescue as he has medical needs (HW positive, severe wounds, and URI/pneumonia) the shelter cannot address properly. Since his interaction with strangers this weekend didnt go well, we introduced him to several new people today (out of his kennel). He is incredibly affectionate with the staff he is comfortable with and it doesnt take him long to be comfortable, but he is reserved with strangers at first. His meets went excellent today and we saw no concerning behavior. We also decided to dress him up as a Super Hero (because he has the heart of a superhero!) to see about his tolerance and to get some great pictures. He had no problem with us putting about 4 different costumes on him, including a large stuffed frog and sticking a stethoscope in his ears. We made sure to have staff who is not as familiar with him work with him to get a better feel for his reaction. He gave us a seriously with this? look a few times, but was cooperative and I think even enjoyed himself! Balboa has a face to melt your heart. He is about 5 years old and he was picked up as a stray and due to the serious wounds all over his body, we thought he had been hit by a car. Hes dog and cat friendly and as lovely as can be. We have had Balboa with us for about 10 days and he has been incredibly loving and affectionate and tolerant with our staff. We recently learned that he is more reserved with strangers. He has given a low growl when approached by select strangers in his kennel and once when a stranger leaned over him outdoors. Taking all this into consideration, we are wondering if Balboa had perhaps rather attacked/stabbed. He has no tearing or wounds on his paws or pads or broken toenails often seen with animals hit by a car, but a huge gaping wound on his belly. Balboa has also tested HW positive and has severe URI we are concerned is turning in pneumonia. Balboa needs immediate medical attention from a rescue. He will only get worse in the shelter and he does not deserve to linger in pain after all he has been through. If there is a rescue that can give him a chance, he will need medical care and understanding that he will need time and space to recover physically and mentally. We believe that Balboa is a good dog who has just been through a lot and needs time to warm up and understanding of his recovery process, physically and mentally. This boy deserves some comfort and a loving home. Hes sure to bring happiness to whomever gives him a chance! Contact CCSPCA_Foster@yahoo
