11/7/2014 Tricholoma Calligatum, Magnivelare, or something else? No camera, so heres the description: Conway MA Basically looks like a matsutake. Growing on forested streambank, under hemlock, white pine among oak, maple, beech. White cottony veil present on younger ones with deeply involute margin. Not slimy but cap covered with dirt & bits of duff (heavy rains within 2 days) cap 7-16cm, pale tan with integrated reddish brown fibers, first pyramidal, involute, expanding to plane, partly concave but broadly umbonate. Gills white. some pinkish coloration staining in age. Flesh white, firm, heavy, little or no discoloration when exposed even overnight. faint browinish staining if any. Gills basically adnexed. Extensively nibbled by rodents. Stipe 2 - 4 cm thick, like a broom handle, fairly even, often more than half - up to 10 cm under the soil. Total length 8-16 cm, Bears a faint ring-remnant where veil was attached. Paler above. Half submerged in soil (rooting but not tapered). Reddish-brown, downward peeling fibers or scales near base. Base is rounded, 2-3 cm adhered with sandy soil. Smells fragrant, sweet, a little pungent - milder but similar odor to Pholiota. Raw taste is mild, nutty, delicous (ingestion pending positive identification). Neither bitter nor latently acrid.
