11.Cory (Philip Harper) What a rock solid opening. Big, bold but so well controlled and balanced. Solo euphonium is so secure and soars into upper register. Just the hint of a wobble at the bottom but its over in a flash. Theres an atmosphere of palpable mystery about Merlins appearance. We hear the percussion in the balance although its one of the more unique lions roars we have heard today! The climax into the battle scene is intense and the battle scene itself commences with purpose. Just the slightest of clips here and there but solo trombone is magnificent and there is huge drive and momentum about this. Thrilling stuff indeed. Philip Harper bounces on the stage and drives his players on. The sheer accuracy of the playing is stunning at times and the final climax thrilling. The love music is so evocative although not without the odd clip in the flugel solo. Eb bass solo is sung with poignancy. One or two strained entries appear in the cornets but again, the climax is searing. Great detail in the final battle and Arthurs death bristles with drama. Euph sinks into the depths and final reprise is stunning. Overall: A title defence of towering impact from Cory. King Arthur lives on in the valleys of South Wales.
