11 Researchers Added to CSC Scientist Rank, Took Oath By Estrella Z. Gallardo Eleven researchers conferred scientist rank by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Civil Service Commission (CSC) took oath on June 30, 2014 at Eastwood Richmond Hotel, Libis, Quezon City. The oath taking was administered by Hon. Francisco T. Duque III, Chairman, CSC and ex-officio chairman, Scientific Career Council (SCC) assisted by Prof. Fortunato T. Dela Pena. The new scientists are Nelly S. Aggangan, Forest Biotechnology and Plant, Nutrition, from BIOTECH, UP Los Banos, for researches on mycorrhizal fungi as alternative to chemical fertilizer for reforestation species, development and commercialization of MYKOVAM, a biofertilizer. Edwin P. Alcantara, Scientist I, Entomology for the implementation of a proactive approach to insect resistance management for transgenic maize in the Philippines, a successful study on baseline susceptibility of insect pest of maize to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cry proteins. From the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC), Department of Agriculture (DA) are Edwin C. Atabay, Scientist I, Animal Reproductive Biotechnology for development of somatic cell nuclear transfer procedure in buffalo, and produce alone embryos, for embryo transfer and artificial insemination, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer and others. Eufrocina P. Atabay, Scientist I, Animal Reproductive Biotechnology for establishing the current in vitro reproductive techniques such as in vitro production of buffalo, cattle, and goat embryos and the cryopreservation of oocytes, embryos, somatic cells, and semen for reproduction and cryobanking purposes. Arnel N. Del Barrio, Scientists I, Ruminant Nutrition for understanding the rumen functions, determination of nutrition value of different feed ingredients, development of appropriate feed supplement strategies and formulation of practical feeding systems for small holders and commercial production of buffaloes. Rosalina M. Lapitan, Scientist I, Ruminant Nutrition for the development of appropriate feed supplementation strategies, that increased the feeding value of crop residues resulting in improved growth and productivity of buffaloes. From the National Crop Protection Center, UP Los Banos, Cristina M. Bajet, Scientist I, Pesticide Chemistry, for the understanding risk management of pesticide residue in food and the environment. Susan May F. Calumpang, Scientist I, Chemical Ecology and Pesticide Management for identifying concerns in agricultural use of pesticide and risk management measure to mitigate risk for consumers. From Fish Nutrition, UP Visayas, Erlinda G. Naret, Scientist I, for the low-cost effective aquaculture diets that utilized non-conventional feedstuffs like processed terrestrial leaves of swamp cabbage, sweet potato, seeds of pigeon pea, green pea and agricultural by-products that could compensate for fish meal partially or completely. From the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), DA, Norvie L. Manigbas, Scientist I, Rice Briefing, Crop Physiology, Agronomy, for the development of WSIC Rc 298 the first released variety of direct seeding and five high yielding and good quality rice lines which were granted Plant Variety Protection certificate. From the National Museum of the Philippines, Arvin C. Diesmos, Scientist III, Herpetology, Biodiversity Research and Conservation for enriching the field herpetology in the Philippines through the discoveries of numerous species new to science. He has currently named over 70 species of frogs, lizards and snakes, field studies in community ecology, biogeography, emerging infectious diseases in amphibians, and assessments of the global conservation status of all Philippine species.
