110. The Senkaku Islands (Part 1) Once Nixon began the process of improving relations between the Communist and capitalist nations, the West needed a new basis for separating Japan and China. The Senkaku Islands were used for this purpose. The Senkakus are a group of islands located in the East China Sea. These islands were yet another piece of territory whose disposition was not clearly defined in the San Francisco Peace Treaty. “In the early 1970s, when Okinawa was returned to Japan, another ‘wedge’ called ‘Senkaku/Diaoyu’ was set in place between Japan and China,” said Hara.
