11s in control Nurstead negotiated a tricky start at Bexleyheath - TopicsExpress

11s in control Nurstead negotiated a tricky start at Bexleyheath III to eventually power home. In scorching conditions at Waring Park in Sidcup, Nurstead were asked to bat. As usual the Bexleyheath opening attack posed some difficult questions as runs off the bat were hard to come by. A frustrated Paul Guyler missed a straight one from the accurate Harsha Kumar. Dan Walker gradually found his touch and runs started to flow despite the skipper falling to a return catch. Indi Singh started in exuberant fashion taking the attack to the bowlers as a 50 partnership was put together in only 6 overs. Dan reached his 10th score of 50 or more for the season in just the 19th over, before over-confidence took over and he departed for 57. Mark Hill and Chris Whatman did not hang around for long and when the Bexleyheath skipper recalled his opening attack Indi tried one big shot too many as Nurstead slipped to 123-6. Ollie Wallace and Andy Brown steadied the ship then Ollie got a snorter, before Browny and Victor had a catastrophic mix up resulting in both being at the same end. Victor tried to make amends with a massive 6 but left next ball with Nurstead on 156-9 with 11 overs still to go. James Marrable having been asked to bat No 11 decided to take a lesson from Ashton Agar and played some nice shots ably supported by the stoic Andy Peeke who was in stern defensive mode. Marrable farmed the strike and gradually accelerated before hitting warp speed in the final over to bring up his maiden half century and perhaps the first by a Nurstead No 11 as the last pair put on 71 as Nurstead closed on a much more respectable 227-9 as Marrable finished unbeaten on 58. Marrable’s batting exploits had clearly disrupted his line as the opening couple of overs saw some scary beamers. However, Victor Singh was on the money and struck early with the help of a catch in the gulley followed by two terrific deliveries that scattered the stumps. Marrable managed to lock on his radar and gradually roughed up the opposition with some snorters, a good catch behind by keeper Brown claimed the opener as he tried to fend one off his body, followed by a calm catch by Indy at mid-on. When Chris Whatman repeated the trick off Victor, Bexleyheath were broken at 34-6. Sadat Ali rallied with some crashing shots as the openers tired before Chris Whatman took a steepling caught and bowled before roughing up the next batsman as Browny took another catch behind. The skipper juggled his resources as Paul Guyler’s wobblers claimed the ninth wicket, and after a brief rally from Adam Edwards Indi Singh claimed his first wicket for the Club as Bexleyheath were finally dismissed for 86 and a sunburnt Nurstead headed back to the shade.
