12.13.14 Video Recommendation To anyone that has experienced suffering and found it problematic I recommend the following video: vimeo/60372916 . This is the first of a 4 part presentation on The Problem of Human Suffering by Douglas Jacoby. The final part is a q/a session that I feel does not add anything significant to the message, but I highly recommend the first three parts, which adds up to approximately 2 hours (a couple of quiet times?). These videos can also be easily found on the YouTubes. I appreciate several aspects of this message. He doesnt mince words; a couple statements that caught me off guard are when he mentions that God is never described in the Bible as nice and that God will, in fact, mess up your life. He talks about the often understated challenge of marriage, that it is so commonly viewed as a solution to lifes problems when in fact it is a tremendous and painful challenge, which few are bold enough to point out. He does not hesitate to address atrocities and the difficulty of their implications, whether it be the problem of child sacrifice in Uganda or the gulag in North Korea. He acknowledges the difficulty such issues pose to believers, and does an excellent job of pointing out and discrediting easy answers. I love that he points out that many heroes of the Bible experienced challenges that lasted decades, rather that weeks or months. The video is outstanding. Since I first found it Ive watched it at least annually. Im actually watching it for what I think is my third time this year (it has been a crazy year). I personally think that everyone should see it at least once, unless theyve never experienced pain. Not a very flattering picture of Jacoby :P V
