12/16/2014 - Around 10am several law enforcement officers from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office went to the area of CR-428 to serve a felony warrant. The warrant was for a Felony – Evading Arrest charge on John Leroy Kirk. Several deputies were needed because the defendant had ran and escaped from a deputy in the past. The deputies arrived at the residence and they were advised that the defendant had just left on a green 4-wheeler ATV. Captain Mark Ellington spotted the ATV parked behind a house in the area they were searching. The defendant observed Captain Ellington pull in the driveway and he began running. The foot pursuit began. Deputy James Hobson and reserve deputy George Daniels chased the defendant and observed him jump over a 4ft. chain link fence and a 6ft. wood fence. Kirk ran in the direction of Sgt. Brett Audilet who gave verbal commands for Kirk stop running. Kirk ignored the commands and ran in the direction of Sgt. Tommy Koen. Sgt. Koen also gave several verbal commands for Kirk to stop. Kirk also ignored those commands. Sgt. Koen used his tazer on Kirk and the pursuit ended. John Leroy Kirk was arrested for the outstanding Evading Arrest felony warrant and was charged with another felony Evading Arrest charge. Also arrested was Tanya Thurman who texted Kirk warning him that law enforcement officers were after him. Officers discovered that she had deleted the text from her phone. Thurman was charged with: (1) a felony charge of Hindering the Apprehension of a Felon and, (2) a felony charge of Tampering with Physical Evidence. Both defendants are in the Liberty County jail. (There will be a press release as soon as the Public Information Officer has time to type it.)
