Mathis Mishawaka, Indiana – Perennial 3A and 4A powers, Mishawaka Marian and Elkhart Memorial met in Mishawaka for an early season taste of America’s game Thursday night… Putting the Fight on the night, Marian took a 3 straight game score (25-12, 25-15, 25-21) and a 3 match streak against their rival, Memorial in 1 hour and 6 minutes Thursday night… The Knights are loaded for bear this season after losing to Catholic rival St. Joe in the Regional final at Plymouth one year ago… Yet, the Knights biggest victory over their brethren was recruiting Jordan Bueter after her Mom and sister played for St. Joe… The Knights 1st game beat down. The teams appeared to be equally charged, but the Knights had a decided advantage when they were able to pass tough serving by the Chargers… With the Knights leading 9-7, Marian ran a string of 5 points in a row when the Chargers took 3 net errors in addition to 2 Allison Ketcham kills to make it 14-7… Marian went on another 5 point role at 15-9 punctuated by Central Michigan 5’11 Outside Attacker recruit Jordan Bueter roping a line shot, while fellow OA Ketcham picked up an ace to make the score 20-9… Indiana University fan and accomplished junior Middle Blocker 6’3” Elizabeth Asdell picked up 2 of her 10 on the night, as 5’8” junior single setter Maggie Gibson spread the wealth… The Knights started off game 2 with 6’0” Alyssa Hassler at the service stripe… Before she was done, Hasler picked up a couple aces to go along with a right side kill by Asdell… Veteran Memorial Coach Jacquie Rost to improve in game 2, steady senior lefts Ally Roskos and Chelsea Bettis picked up kills to spark the Chargers comeback attempt, as they recorded 5 of the next 6 points, including a right side kill by 6 foot sophomore Darrian Mowery…. With junior Madison Robison serving Memorial went on a 5 point run including a couple aces and 10 point tie, as Marian Coach Dan Anderson called his first timeout at the 8 minute mark… Memorial tried battling back to within a point, down just 15-16, on a right side kill by impressive sophomore Mowery…. Up to the service line steps 5’5” senior DS Laura Szuba, who had a surfboard accident over the weekend… The Chargers were done before Szuba was finished as the Knights took the next 9 points on a variety of situations with the 2nd game ending 25-15 in just 20 minutes… The Chargers had another chance in game 3 as senior Elizabeth Hurtle notched an ace to give them an 8-7 lead… But, Marian answered with 5 by a Memorial HE, and kills by Hunsberger, Hassler, and Ketcham before another Memorial HE… TO – Chargers at the 8 minute mark… With Marian in control 16-11, Memorial responded with 3 points on a solo block, a libero error, and ace by Roskos… Now, 3 points by Marian, with Asdell recording a solo block and a kill and a blast by Bueter… Now, 3 points by Memorial, with a solo block by EXTREMELY athletic college bound senior Bettis, who also records a beautiful transition kill out of the middle… Marian setter Gibson puts out the fire with a dump to the middle 10 foot line, but EM’s Bettis answers with some thunder from the right as Marian is up 20-18…. Marian scores 4 of the next 6 to make it 24-20 on, a kill by Beuter, a Charger NE, an errant Elkhart tip, a Hasler comeback shot to the server’s corner. After a sideout, Ketcham ended the match at 8:59 local time. Interviewed after the match, Memorial’s Coach Rost, was pleased with her team’s fight in the 3rd game, where their ball control improved, enabling quicker, transition plays…. Marian’s Coach Anderson felt his team had a little more offensive firepower but were tested by the hard serving of Memorial, especially in the first game… “We played steady enough”, concluded Anderson… The 8 mile rivals will not have to wait long for a rematch as they are scheduled to play in the same pool at the Mishawaka High School Invitational on Saturday 31 August along with Carmel and Indianapolis Cathedral. The other pool will include Mishawaka, South Bend Clay, Lafayette Harrison and South Bend St. Joe… St. Joe was upset in tonight’s South Bend Community School’s final in two games by Elkhart Central with their all American Team USA senior and Coach’s daughter Azariah Stahl who is committed to Purdue for 2014… St. Joe had an impressive summer campaign where they defeated 3A rival New Prairie twice in the same day during Dunes Volleyball Team Camp… Stats Marian Memorial: Kills Ketcham 12 Bettis 8 Beuter, Asdell 10 Schultheis 7 Hitting Percentages Hunsberger 385 Ketcham 333 Beuter 304 Hasler 305 Asdell 261 Assists Gibson 32 Mills 16 Digs Beuter 11 Welter 24 Ketcham 10 Szucs 12 Gibson 5 Brown 8 Pullin 4
