Details: Early Warning Network: ewn.au NT Flood Threat Advice: Western & Eastern Inland Rivers Issued at 12:46 pm CST on Thursday 8 January 2015 Flood watch number: 6 The monsoon trough is slow moving near the base of the Top End causing monsoonal showers and storms to persist in the north. Another trough over southern parts will continue to cause showers and storms with rain areas over the rest of the Territory. A deep tropical low over the Kimberley is expected to move southeast into central Australia late this week as a trough moves through from WA. Widespread rainfall totals of 30 to 70 mm and an isolated total of 100 mm have been recorded in the area over the last 24 hours. Widespread daily rainfall totals of 20 to 50 mm, with possible heavy falls over 100 mm expected throughout the southern parts of the Western and Eastern Inland Rivers during Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rainfall contracting to the far southeast during Sunday morning. These falls are expected to lead to significant stream rises which may affect road access at times. Some communities may become isolated. Travellers in the Tanami, Barkly, Lasseter and Simpson districts are advised to check road conditions and weather forecasts before embarking. The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should: - Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways - Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current - Stop children playing in or near floodwaters - Create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillowcases and shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home - Be careful of fallen power lines.
