Details: Early Warning Network: ewn.au NT Flood Threat Advice: Western and Central Inland Rivers Issued at 12:52 pm CST on Monday 5 January 2015 Flood watch number: 3 The monsoon trough is slow moving near the base of the Top End causing monsoonal showers and storms to persist in the north. Another trough over southern parts will continue to cause showers and storms with rain areas over the rest of the Territory. A deep tropical low over the Kimberley is expected to move slowly towards the southwest, resulting in a humid northeasterly flow converging over the central and southern parts of the Territory as a trough approaches from WA during the week. Rainfall totals of 30 to 100 mm have been recorded in the area over the last 24 hours. Scattered falls of 25 to 50 mm, with isolated heavy falls to 100 mm are expected throughout the Western Inland Rivers and the western parts of the Central Inland Rivers during the next 24 to 72 hours. These falls are expected to lead to significant stream rises which may affect road access at times. Some communities may become isolated. The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should: - Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways - Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current - Stop children playing in or near floodwaters - Create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillowcases and shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home - Be careful of fallen power lines.
