12 MILLION DOSES OF TESTED EBOLA VACCINES MAY BE IN FULL USE IN WEST AFRICA BY JUNE-JULY THIS YEAR. The World Health Organization has declared 2 experimental Ebola vaccines as possessing an acceptable safety profile for them to now be tested on healthy people, including healthcare workers, in West Africa. Those field tests are expected to last 6 months. The experimental vaccines approved for testing are those developed by both GlaxoSmithKline and Merck & Newlink. Although the Newlink vaccine was recently withdrawn from testing because some patients complained of pain, W.H.O. after review of the statistics, concluded that the reported side effects were immaterial and so will now resume testing in West Africa. Concurrent with the pending field tests, GKS and Merck-Newlink will begin the manufacturing process to meet expected demand in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The total population of the 3 Ebola-infested countries is circa 17 million. GAVI Partnership, an organization uniting private philanthropic groups with donor governments, has issued a statement that it will provide $300 million for the supply of W.H.O-approved vaccines. This amount is said to be enough to fund 12 million doses.
