12 Years a Slave: A+ Plot: In 1841, a free black man named Solomon Northrup was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Bought by a compassionate slave owner, his belief in justice and free will gets him in trouble and he is sold to a vicious slave owner with a penchant for using Scripture to justify slavery. Throughout his 12 years of enslavement, he is beaten, made less human, forced to do unspeakable things in order to survive, but holds on to hope. Review: My reviews have almost always been from the point of view of a general movie goer focusing on story, acting, direction and such, but this film I will be reviewing differently. As a Christian, this film challenged me to look at the ugliness that comes when scripture is used to dehumanize. To see slave owners used the word of God to justify turning men into less than human and force them to do things in order to break their spirit made me sick to my stomach knowing that this took place and still happens today. This film is not for the faint of heart. It is an emotional roller coaster and the cries of justice and compassion just naturally rise up. We are never at a loss for examples of human cruelty and there is plenty to see here, but we crave examples of hope, justice, compassion and love as well. We crave meaning and value, that we will not be forgotten. Do yourself a favor and watch this film. It is not for entertainment, but is a reminder that every life has meaning and value no matter what has happened or what has been said about you.
