12 Years a Slave was a great movie, certainly better than any - TopicsExpress

12 Years a Slave was a great movie, certainly better than any other this past year, fully deserving of its Oscar. It comprises one of a genre of movies treating slavery in the United States which all deal with enslavement of Africans. There have been no movies about white slavery, and just broaching the subject seems to make white liberals angry. Curiously, I find black Americans more interested in the subject and more receptive to listening about it. No race has a monopoly on being subjected to the indignity of slavery. White slavery in America has been euphemistically described as “indentured servitude,” but it was every bit as venal as other forms of slavery. White slaves in America were beaten, tortured, and worked to death. Thomas Jefferson is always sullied for having an alleged relationship with a black slave with whom he fathered a son,, a story told in the movie Jefferson in Paris, but who has heard of George Washington offering a reward for the capture and return of two runaway white servants (slaves if you will). Promulgation of knowledge on this subject is selective among liberal film makers. Slavery was and is a brutal, ugly business. In 18th century Haiti, black overlords had both black and white slaves, and it was the white slaves who were treated significantly worse. This is not surprising since the history of Haiti is replete with examples of genocides against white people. Perhaps the greatest example of white slavery involved the pirates of Barbary Coast. More than a million white Christian Europeans were kidnapped by African Muslims and forced to endure hardships and torture that rival what black slaves in America experienced. I suppose it just is not in vogue to discuss white slavery, but it should be. Wherever on this earth there is man or woman owned by another, it should be reviled, yet in Africa, Asia, and in the Middle East slavery continues to thrive. People of the world need to be aware of this problem in all of its manifestations and the race of its victims should be immaterial. Slavery was and IS intolerable.
