Arthur Young toured all over Ireland between 1776 and 1779 ( his book is available as a free download) and he noted many things - one in particular was the regular whipping of servants by landlords for any reason and none. A landlord in Ireland can scarcely invent an order which a servant , labourer or cotter dares to refuse or execute. Nothing satisfies him but an unlimited submission. Disrespect or anything tending towards sauciness he may punish with his cane or his horsewhip with the most perfect security; a poor man would have his bones broke if he offered to lift his hand in his own defence. 12 years a slave - those poor Irish spent their entire life as a slave!
