Why I became a refugee? Oveyed Abed Neissi I was born in 1948 in Hovaizeh (a city located in south west of Iran). I grow up there, a faraway boy who always wanted to be different, and asked for freedom for his people. I was a boy who always looked towards a bright future and wanted to share his dreams by educating his people to request their freedom. Therefore I chose to undertake education degree. Then, I became a teacher as I continued my study in Aborihan Beroni University in Tehran. After graduation I became a high school principal at Nushirwan High School in Hovaizeh. You may ask yourself why a successful person, in love with his nation would leave his country and his dreams to become a refugee? There are many reasons that led to my decision and to understand them, you need to know about my life. I was imprisoned on 1977 in the city of Ramhormoz for three months because I taught my students about the history of my people who suffered and are suffering simply because they are Arabs. I wanted my students to know how their nation was occupied by the Iranian regime. I simply followed my dreams and I was punished for that. The Iranian revolution: In 1979 people put their hope in the revolution and the new regime, hoping for a bright future. Unfortunately the new regime was harsher and treated my people with even less respect. The new regime was arresting all educated people and all educated Arabs from Ahwaz were waiting to be arrested or be punished by the new government. However, I did not stop following my dreams and tried one more time to stand up and have a say about my people’s rights. Therefore I attended a protest in Hovaizeh against dictatorship where I got arrested for the second time. After I was released, I was not allowed to return to my job. The Iraq war: In 1981 the Iraqi regime occupied parts of my nation. I created a small school to educate children, as the Iranian regime could no longer access me. The Iraqi army liked my idea and helped me to continue it. Therefore I left Iran and went to Basra in Iraq where I found a job in the media and worked as a broadcaster. I found this job a good opportunity to raise awareness of my people and introduce my nation’s history. I stayed in Iraq for 8 years as I continued working in the media. Then the Iranian military forces entered Iraq during the Gulf war and my family and I returned to Iran were I was imprisoned for 6 years in Karoon prison in Ahwaz. Life after prison When I was released I was no longer able to work and my children were not allowed to undertake tertiary education. Therefore I left Iran in 1991 and introduced myself to UNHCR in Syria. Then my family joined me in Syria in 2006 and we lived there illegally waiting for our visas to arrive. Later, the UNHCR informed us that we were not allowed to leave Syria as the Syrian government has agreed with the Iranian regime to capture us. So we escaped from Syria to Lebanon and entered Lebanon illegally. In Lebanon we went to UNHCR and introduce ourselves. We waited six months in Lebanon for our visas to arrive. Then in June 2009 we came to Australia. I hope my life story does not make you feel down and does not stop you from dreaming. My dreams may not come true but I will never stop dreaming and hoping for a better future. Like · · Share
