125 YEARS AGO... By 11:00 am, on May 31, 1889, the water had become level with the top of the dam. Shortly after, Col. Unger sent John Parke to South Fork to warn the residents there and down the valley that the dam was in danger of failing. Due to his youth and the fact that he was new to the area, many people at first didnt take the warning too seriously. However, another reason why this was so was because of D.W.C. Bidwell, Club member and waiting for a train at South Fork. When Parke left to return to the dam, Bidwell went around telling people that there really wasnt anything to get excited about...~NMK
