13.8-M indemnity checks for 1,198 farmers of Northern Isabela North Isabela- One thousand one hundred ninety eight (1,198) agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) of San Pablo and Cabagan, Isabela recently received their indemnity claims to cover the losses over their rice and corn farmlands brought about by a drought that hit Isabela during the second cropping season this year. DAR Region 2 Director Atty. Marjorie P. Ayson said the checks amounting to Php13.8M covers 2,044.31 hectares of farmland from the municipalities of San Pablo and Cabagan. In early 2013, the Department of Agrarian Reform and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) launched the Agrarian Reform Beneficiary – Agricultural Insurance Program (ARB-AIP) providing comprehensive crop insurance protection against crop loss caused by natural disasters, pest infestation and plant diseases for the ARBs. DAR subsidized 100% of the ARBs’ premium for rice, corn, high value crops and livestock insurance, which has a built-in insurance for accident and death of ARBs and members of their household. Ayson said the coverage of the crop insurance starts from the date of issuance of the Certificate of Insurance Cover (CIC). This means that insurance will start from planting to harvesting and will cover the cost of production inputs plus an additional amount to cover up to 20% of the value of the expected yield. Regional Manager Edna SP. Marallag of PCIC advised the farmers to use the indemnity proceeds as capital to purchase farm inputs for the next cropping season. (admin p.a.m.r.s.)
