13 June 2013, Week 7 – Day 45 of our Trip Around Australia (mrlocks.tumblr) https://facebook/mark.seberry?ref=tn_tnmn “1CADFAY”, (1 cache a day for a year). Mary Pool WA – Halls Creek WA We were woken early this morning by the screeching cockatoos which must have been disturbed by some of the campers leaving early. The sun wasn’t even up but it was light. We did not hurry, taking our time over breakfast and packing up without too much rush. I had my back turned for a while and when I finished what I was doing, I turned around to find most of the campers who were near us were now gone. The camp ground last night had well over 80 vehicles and there was still room for more to squeeze in. It’s funny watching them come in, some, like us, who may be new to this free camp setup, drive round a couple of times before they pick a spot and carefully park, others who seem to be quite used to the procedure, pick a spot they like and just drive straight in and are set up in minutes with a cold beer in hand, sometimes even before, lol. As we were leaving the camp ground at 9am there were some new arrivals on their way in. On our way towards Halls Creek we passed the turn off to Margaret River Station. I had wanted to stop and get a photo of the sign but we had passed by before we realized, we couldn’t find any safe place to stop and turn around so had to keep going. Some way up the road we came to a view point, looking down into the valley and the hills in the distance, we quickly stopped to take a photo and carried on. The trip only took slightly over an hour and once we arrived in town we went straight to the local tourist office to get some info about the area. We then went to the local caravan park to have a look and checked in for one night. We drove around and chose a spot to park, the site are very odd in that there is a concrete pad with power, water and a drain in the middle and this is designed to be shared by two vehicles. We found a vacant pad and set up also putting out the annex which over hung most of the concrete pad, if someone did chose to park next to us they would have little or no room to put their stuff, I guess that’s why no one did, lol, even though the park was very full by the end of the day. I was quite nice to have the site to ourselves. After we got set up we quickly went in to town to do a bit of shopping and then back to the caravan for lunch. After lunch we went off for a drive to see China Wall, this was a large vein of white quartz sticking out of the ground above the surrounding rock on the hillside. It probably doesn’t sound all that exciting but the landscape around the area was very spectacular and well worth the time to go and see. We climbed along the wall to the top of the hills to view the surrounding countryside with rocky hills and valleys. Our next destination was the Old Halls Creek, this is a ghost town with some ruins and markers to show what was where in the past. We wandered around looking at what plaques were still in place, unfortunately most of the bronze plaques have been stolen. There is an old building made from mud bricks which is very eroded, it has had a structure built over it to help protect it, it once housed the post office. We drove up the hill to where there in a caravan park, the place looks quite run down and a bit rough around the edges, …………………and in the middle, the road in was a steep potholed track which would have been a challenge to get the van in without damage. On the grounds of the caravan park was the old cemetery, there were lots of people listed as having been buried here but only a few intact headstones left, outside there was a small pet cemetery. Once again, all too soon, the sun was getting low in the sky and it was time to head back to the caravan to make dinners and settle in for the night. We did manage to squeeze in a refreshing swim in the pool before dinner.
