13 years ago, I was asked to program The Duplex Cabaret Theatre. I did that for 4 years. Then, I asked the owner of the West Bank Cafe if we could come play at the Beechman & happily got a yes. Did that for 5 years. Then came perhaps my greatest challenge - a beautiful and sophisticated brand new room called 54 Below, which I was asked, by our extraordinary owners, to program & where it’s been my delight to work for the past 3 years. Well - it’s The Last Midnight, kids. Tonight, I play my final two performances as the Director of Original Programming. WHAT a ride it’s been. Programming the first year & a half of this dynamic venue was a thrill. Most especially, over the past 13 months, we’ve presented over 100 performances under my current title. I’ve had the pleasure to not only create, write, direct, produce, host & cast the majority of them (2 new shows every 7 days), but most importantly, to work with the most talented people in show business & to play with the most phenomenal audiences from NYC & far beyond (Turkey, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, the UK - just to name a few). I’m pleased to be staying on as a consultant at 54 Below where we will continue our popular Sondheim Unplugged series (sold out tonight!) & you can also look for me at the helm of a few exciting 54 projects in 2015. However, it’s time for me to Whistle Down the Wind and see what else is out there. After 13 years of dedicating my life to one room or another, I’m anxious to see what else I can do, creatively, & explore where the tide may take me. It has been my joy to bring these shows to life & my profound pleasure to work with a truly extraordinary company of actors, musicians & musical directors whom I consider my lifelong friends. The saying “I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends,” has never been truer than it is for me today (oh, that Beatles show I always meant to get to!). Here we go! I depart with pride & gratitude. Let’s make a night of it, boys & girls! Goodbye For Now. https://youtube/watch?v=MI1BEqb-JfI
