13 years ago, my high school class (A2003) produced a radio play portentously called Puso. The then-fantastical premise is what would happen when a rag-tag Philippine basketball team somehow makes it to the basketball world championships. Our fictional Philippine team, with members inspired by loveable misfits in Philippine basketball, experiences some struggles. The captain, Heart dela Cruz (inspired by Art dela Cruz, voiced by Raf Ignacio) has a lot of heart but no skill. The enforcer, Wilmer Gong (inspired by Wilmer Ong, voiced by Joseph D. Baricaua), is scatterbrained. The shooter, Elmer Escobar (inspired by Elmer Lago and Jolly Escobar, voiced by Patrick Ozaeta), is a ball hog. The coach (whom I voiced) has a short fuse. The team loses all its games by wide margins. But in the last game against Team USA (led by Gary Payton, of all people), the players get it together in the second half and rally back from a 30-point deficit, only to lose by a hair. Defeated but unbowed, the players come home to a heroes welcome. The running joke of the play is its improbable premise. That is, until this past week. Weve watched the Gilas Pilipinas players go through their ups and their many downs, but in the end, their heart shone through. Good luck to our boys in their last game today, and hopefully they get one more win than Heart dela Cruz and company.
