13 years ago on September 11th I was living at 8386 Blackburn Avenue with Scott Katz and working at Writers and Artists talent agency with Dina Shapiro and I got a 6:30am phone call from my Dad to turn on the TV and I saw what the world saw - the Twin Towers on fire and it felt like it was the end of the world - being broadcast on television. I called my boss Marti Blumenthal and we decided to shut down the agency for the day. For my generation, this day is our JFK assassination or Pearl Harbor. We all lost our innocence that day. All of us Americans became a little more jaded and a lot more careful. We started to value the things we took for granted just a little more. I remember my friend Gabriel Gordon decided to drive to NYC from LA on that day to help out cause all of the flights had been canceled. I remember another friend, a talent agent at ICM who was Irish telling me that his father called him and said to him today, we are all Israelis and I remember feeling that as an Israeli American there was no side of me that could be innocent anymore. Both of my identities were openly vulnerable to acts of terror. I have long held the belief that extreme religion is an instrument of evil. I am cynical and post 9/11 Ive become more cynical. Thats what happens when you lose your innocence. Either that or you become fanatical. I wish more of the world would become cynical with me and realize that fanaticism is just a big waste of time. The life we lead is ours. It is real. There is no promise that something exists afterwards. So why spend so much energy on something that isnt sure? Why harm others for those beliefs? I just dont get it. I dont think I ever will.
