135th death anniversary of Begum Hazarat Mahal A wreath laying ceremony was organised by Embassy of India in Kathmandu to commemorate the 135th death anniversary of Begum Hazarat Mahal, on 7th April 2014 at Kathmandu. People from different walks of life, including political leaders, community leaders and media persons attended the ceremony to pay homage to Begum Hazarat Mahal. “Begum Hazrat Mahal was an extraordinary freedom fighter of India who played a vital role in Indias First War of Independence and her contribution towards the freedom movement of India will always be remembered” - said Shri Ranjit Rae, Ambassador of India to Nepal while laying a wreath on the tomb of Begum Hazarat Mahal at Bagh Bazar area of Kathmandu on 7th April 2014. Begum Hazrat Mahal was the wife of the then ruler of Awadh (Uttar Pradesh, India), Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. Her maiden name was Muhammadi Khanum and she was bestowed the title Hazrat Mahal after the birth of her son Birjis Qadr. She led the revolutionary government of Awadh from 1857-58. She was a valiant leader and sacrificed her life to the cause of India’s freedom. She rallied her people to oppose the colonial power and convinced Indian soldiers in the colonial army to join the rebellion. After the British recaptured the capital of Awadh, she took refuge in Nepal. The tomb of Begum Hazarat Mahal in the Bagh Bazaar area of Kathmandu carries an inscription that she breathed her last in Nepal on April 7, 1879. The Begum was buried in the courtyard of the ‘Hindustani Masjid’, the mosque she had built for her followers. Decades later, this structure was torn down and a new mosque, now known as the Jame Masjid, was built in its place. Today, Hazrat Mahal’s resting place lies in the mosque complex of Jame Masjid Kathmandu. No.KAT/P&I/119/2014 Date - 07.04.2014
