13Jan2015 - Liam is now sporting a double lumen PICC line! We used it this afternoon and it is working great. Liams hearing test was also completed this morning. He has high frequency (a.k.a. pitch - think womens voices, birds singing, s and sh type sounds) hearing loss in both ears...moderate in one, moderate to severe in the other. We knew this was a possible side effect of the chemotherapy. Unfortunately, he starts his 96 hours of continuous conditioning chemotherapy tomorrow and those medicines are likely to cause additional hearing loss. We will eventually have another ABR to see what effect this round will have, a consultation with an ENT, and an appointment to get hearing aids. Back in August when I learned that he might lose his hearing as a result of treatment, I was immediately comforted that we have used sign language with all of our children from infancy. Neither Fred nor I (nor any of our kids) are fluent in ASL, but we have some signing vocabulary thanks to SigningTime!, Baby SigningTime!, Rachel and the Treeschoolers, and all the other wonderful Two Little Hands productions. While I was aware that I would still have a lot to learn, it was not an overwhelming possibility. Today, I was comforted as I realized that either (1) Liams hearing is going to be miraculously restored or (2) his journey with hearing loss/hearing aids will equip him for the next stage in his journey. I continue to believe that Liam has a special calling on his life and that each and every part of this adventure will be used for Gods glory. Liam continues to respond to the sound of my voice, sing along with music, and speak. The hearing loss does not seem to have impacted his quality of life or caused any complaints. Hes a trooper. Prayer Requests: 1) Liams hearing would bring God glory whether through miraculous healing or the opportunity to meet/interact/share Gods love with an audience he might never have met otherwise 2) Sleep, rest, comfort as we head into a tough chemo schedule with lots of known side effects (nausea, mucositis, hearing loss are the top three) 3) Wisdom for me as I select Liams food in accordance with his new dietary restrictions
