13th AUG – TUESDAY – Oban. Awoke to another fine day, morning coffee, then a mad dash down the promenade to the ferry. We are off to Mull and Iona for the day. We arrived in Craignure where the tour bus gave us a running commentary for an hour and half, on the island’s history and wide-life while we made our way down to the southern eastern tip, Fionnphort. The scenery was very similar to NZ I thought. We then crossed over to Iona on the second ferry, a centre of Christian practice since Columba arrived there in AD563. His monastery thrived for centuries despite repeated Viking raids and around 1200 the Abbey and Nunnery were founded. Today they have been party restored while nature has made its way in too with creeping ferns in the Abbey’s walls, adding to the appeal. It is hard to fathom that standing at the base of one of the high crosses they have been on the same spot since AD700. The Celtic high crosses had the circle incorporated into their design as the arms of the cross were getting too heavy and they kept falling over! Back on the ferry, the bus and the ferry we returned to Oban. We had to do it; fish’n’chips by the sea and then a Scottish delicacy . . . a deep-fried Mars Bar, end of a perfect day. Miss you all.
