(3) Similarly, the art of reading is the skill of catching every sort of communication as well as possible. ====== 어제 읽은 내용은 @이호성님이 이해하신 글을 약간 바꿔 보았습니다. Catching the ball is just as much an activity as pitching or hitting it(=the ball). 야구공을 잡는 것은 야구공을 던지거나 치는 것 만큼 능동적인 활동이다. The pitcher or batter is the sender in the sense that his activity initiates the motion of the ball. 투수와 타자는 그들의 행동이 공의 움직임을 개시한다는 점에서 보내는 자(sender)이다. The catcher or fielder is the receiver in the sense that his activity terminates it(=the motion of the ball). 포수와 야수는 그들의 행동이 공의 움직임을 종료시킨다는 점에서 받는 자(receiver)이다. *fielder를 야수라고 하는 군요.. 미녀와 야수만 생각나네요 -.,- ** 이렇게 it이 가리키는 것을 복원해서 생각해보는 것, 글의 흐름을 잘 따라가는 데 좋은 방법이라고 생각합니다. Both are active, though the activities are different. 두 행동은 서로 다르긴 하지만, 둘 다 능동적인 활동이다. If anything is passive, it is the ball. 여기에서 수동적인 것이 있다면, 그것은 (포수나 타자가 아니라) 야구공이다. It(=the ball) is the inert thing that is put in motion or stopped, whereas the players are active, moving to pitch, hit, or catch. 야구선수들은 야구공을 던지거나 치거나 잡기 위해 움직이는 등 능동적인 반면에, 야구공은 움직이는 상태에 놓이거나 멈추어지는, 비활성 물체이다. The analogy with writing and reading is almost perfect. 쓰기와 읽기를 야구에 비유하는 것은 거의 완벽하다. The thing that is written and read, like the ball, is the passive object common to the two activities that begin and terminate the process. 쓰여진 글이나 읽히는 글은, 글이 전달되는 그 과정을 개시하고 종료시키는 두 가지 활동 즉 읽기활동과 쓰기 활동에 있어서 공통적으로 등장하는 수동적인 무언가이다.
