14 DECEMBER; Astoria, OR, USA: In Gowan Ring Hear symbolist folk music | Coast Weekend – B’ee brings In Gowan Ring to play KALA. ASTORIA — KALA welcomes the return of artist B’ee in concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14. Doors open at 7 p.m., and there is a $7 admission. For the last 20 years, B’ee has crafted homemade instruments and original music, which he calls symbolist folk music, under the band In Gowan Ring. It has been an itinerant journey leading him around the world, meeting other musicians and traditions, and most recently leading him to Leipzig, Germany. The music of In Gowan Ring is within a magico-poetic-folk tradition using acoustic instruments, voice and poetry to convey transcendent experience, engaging the listener in mythic realities. Sometimes this genre is called psychedelic folk. The band is influenced by other psychedelic folk groups such as Incredible String Band, Pentangle and Nick Drake; In Gowan Ring also blends elements of medieval and Renaissance early music, the mystic poetry of Hafiz and Rumi, and spiritual minimalist music. The group uses arrangements for pear guitar, harp, psaltery, flute, percussion, string drones, hurdy gurdy as well as multiple vocal harmonies in counterpoint. Most instruments are handcrafted by B’ee himself.
