14-Day Weather outlook in motion. Map 1: shows the low temperatures over the next 14 days across the U.S. Pretty easy to see when the cold blast will move into the U.S. around Christmas in the Central U.S. and 26th along the East Coast...pretty mild until then for most of the U.S. Notice how quickly the cold retreats by the 31st so this remains a fast progressive weather pattern typical of El Nino winters. Map 2: shows temperatures compared to average (reds warmer than they should be this time of year, blues colder than average). Cold blast the 25th-31st for the Eastern half of the U.S. Map 3: shows rain/snowfall storm systems traversing the country. There is a very strong split jet stream (polar branch to the north is the cold one and a sub-tropical southern branch is warm/wet) and unless the two phase together the chances of a bigger snow storm are unlikely. Still some threat around Christmas but models are not sold on that. Map 4: shows weekly snowfall totals with the Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes and interior New England the snowiest areas. This will be updated daily through the holidays so come back for updates as the pattern is fast and likely to change on timing and exact tracks. Chart 5: shows the roller coaster ride of temperatures here at wt360 headquarters in Bethlehem, PA - mild through Christmas but then a bigger cool down for the last week of the month. Chart 6: shows national Dec 1-17 snowfall trends through today from 1992-2014. The U.S. is still trending the least national snow in over 25 years with 82% less snow than last year and 72% below average!
