14 September 1979: George Foster, 30-year-old Protestant, married with 2 children and a Prison Officer was leaving the Buffs Club with a colleague on Century Street when he was shot by the IRA. Mr Foster and his colleague normally had lunch in the club and were returning to the prison. There were 4 prison officers in a Ford Capri car which had been hit several times. Mr Foster was struck in the head and a colleague was hit in both arms. The gunmen were waiting in Harrybrooke Street and followed Mr Fosters car into Century Street before they opened fire. Mr Foster was from Cherryhill Drive in Dundonald. Two years earlier he had joined the prison service and had previously spent a year in the UDR. A west Belfast man was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years in prison for Mr Fosters manslaughter and 2 life sentences for killing 2 soldiers. LEST WE FORGET!
