14 th Richest Country In The World ..... Really ???? Nicola Sturgeon says Scotland is the 14th strongest economy in the world! Lets think about that… Currently the 14th strongest economy is South Korea with over 50m people and a GDP of $1.3trn USD (source Wiki for population and Worldbank for GDP). Currently Scotland has around 5.3m people and a GDP of $228.2bn (source Wiki for population and Scottish Govt’s for GDP - EXCLUDING offshore). If we’re being generous lets factor in the entire tax revenue for UK’s oil and gas (ignoring conveniently the fact that this is the UK’s not just Scotland’s geographical share). For this we can use the figures from Oil and Gas UK, the trade association for the UK’s upstream oil and gas industry and the UK’s largest corporation tax payer, and their consultants PWC. They say this is $49bn (source PWC). So going forward we have a figure of around $277.2 billion which is very generous; my opinion is it would be more like $250bn. So based on what we know and not having a crystal ball at the moment Scotland, therefore iScotland, will be either on a par with Greece (43rd at $242bn) or Chile (38th at $277bn) but certainly not 14th. (source Worldbank). Thing is what other ‘facts’ have been misrepresented? A No vote means staying part of the worlds 6th strongest economy. A Yes vote means becoming one around the 38th/43rd. Let’s say for the sake of argument something like The Philippines.
