14 years ago Chef Leon Rice had it made. This 1982 Brainerd High graduate decided he would be a chef when he was 8 years old. After graduating from Johnson and Wales Culinary School, he trained chefs and kitchen staff for a national restaurant chain. Livin the good life in NYC. Then came a call from one of his teachers, back in Chattanooga. That teacher had recommended Chef Rice for a culinary teaching job at Brainerd High. His interview was scheduled for the next day. He didnt want the job, and he wasnt available for the interview. He sure didnt want to be around any teenagers. Chef Rice said hed pray about it. He got no answer other than a contract to sign. Under Chef Rices demanding guidance, 85 Brainerd High students are admitted to his Culinary Arts program each year. Over these 14 years, many have successfully entered the job market. Several have gone on to study Culinary Arts at post secondary school. So check out the Bistro at Brainerd High. Youll have a great meal, graciously served by the Culinary Arts students.
