14 years ago The Independent offered a £5000 prize to anyone who could provide irrefutable scientific evidence that would solve the puzzle re the vanishing of Londons sparrows. This prize has still not been claimed. On July 21 Michael McCarthy from The Independent asked why the numbers of sparrows in Paris had not fallen and indeed the birds were thriving there. While I was in Paris for the past 4 days I decided to check out the sparrows. They were indeed numerous. One thing that struck me was the number of green areas within the city. A new publication suggests that this could be a factor causing the calamitous reduction in numbers in London, with insufficient insects to feed the young.
