140 trucks have hauled in about 1400 cubic yards of concrete to start the foundation for the new tunnel for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams! Yesterday, beginning at 3 a.m., concrete was poured to a depth of 54 inches to cover about 20 percent of a hole that is 1,500 feet long and 70 feet wide. Chris Thronson, project engineer for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, said it will take about 28 days for the concrete to cure and achieve design strength. A second pour will come in about a week, followed by two more pours at two-to-three week intervals. Construction of FRIB will take three years, followed by two years of equipment installation and testing. The facility is expected to be operational sometime between 2020 and 2022.
