140314 What use to me is frankincense that comes from Sheba, or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing to me. (Jeremiah 6:20) What is it that the Lord really wants from our worship? Firstly he wants worship and not empty ritual. One heartfelt prayer is worth more than an hours of carefully constructed ritual that might look impressive bit has no heart; or a half hour of worship songs where one begins to think I would rather like to sit down for a bit now but one stays standing and singing because everyone else is (are they all thinking the same thing but dare not be the first?!). There is nothing wrong with ritual, or singing for long periods if the praying heart is in it. But when it is done because that is what we do here or you cant possibly worship properly without doing this, then we need to think again. The Lord thinks much more of a joyful yet penitent heart that worships to him humbly, than any construction designed to induce the correct sentiment for the occasion; the latter is empty worship.
