1488/6980/242333 Corporal Samuel Wheat 1/6th Battalion, The North Staffordshire Regiment (Territorial Force) Sam Wheat came from Tutbury and was married to Sarah. They lived at 4 Ludgate Street and Sam worked at the Nestle factory in the town. He had joined the Tutbury detachment of “B” Company on 16 May 1911 and was embodied at the outbreak of the war. On the formation of the 1/6th Battalion, his company became part of “A” Company on the adoption of the four company system. Sam Wheat was wounded on 13 October 1915 during the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt. On recovering from his wound, he returned to the front, only to be gassed while serving near Loos on 28 August 1917. He was taken to an Advanced Dressing Station but died of gas poisoning the following day. He is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery in Mazingarbe: Plot I, Row V, Grave 17. His wife had printed a mourning card which included the following verse: “When nights are dark and friends are few, Dear Husband, how I long for you; The unknown grave is a bitter blow, None but an aching heart will know.” Sam Wheat is also commemorated on the war memorials at Tutbury and the plaque inside St Werburg’s Parish Church at Hanbury.
