15/01/2015 REMEMBRANCE DAY: GOV DICKSON LAUDS ARMED FORCES FOR PROTECTING NATION’S DEMOCRACY, TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY, PEACE AND STABILITY Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson on Thursday joined other well-meaning Nigerians in expressing gratitude to both fallen and surviving members of the armed forces for risking their lives to protect the nation’s territorial integrity, peace and stability. Governor Dickson, who spoke at the grand finale of the 2015 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Yenagoa, noted that, apart from securing the country, the military has contributed significantly towards the protection and development of the present democratic experience, right from its inception in 1999. Describing the armed forces as the bastion and custodian of the nation’s democracy and development, Hon. Dickson stressed the need for all to appreciate the efforts of the military and other security agencies in securing lives and property in the country. According to the Governor, the surest way to make a society grow and inspire the younger generation is to honour those, who have provided invaluable services for the good of the nation. To this end, he said his administration would continue to place the highest premium on areas that, could support security agencies to enable them perform their statutory duties. His words, “ The Government and good people of our dear state owe a lot of gratitude to our fallen heroes, who put their lives on firing line for the sake of our nation, humanity and our shared values. “In this state, we will always appreciate our gallant soldiers, especially those, who are serving officers and men of the various security agencies, who work day and night to protect our fundamental and guaranteed liberties and freedoms under the constitution. “To the Armed Forces, we say thank you for working, as officers and men under the Commander In Chief, to protect our nation’s territorial integrity, constitutional sovereignty and democracy, for in the end, you remain the primary and fundamental bastion of our nation’s development and democracy. In the last 16 years, you have demonstrated clearly, even to confound all enemies of our nation and democracy, that at last, our nation’s military has come of age.” Governor Dickson, however, urged security agencies to remain loyal to all constituted authorities, as determined by the country’s constitution and their doctrines of service in the performance of their assignments. He also called on all strata of the Nigerian society, particularly the political class, to demonstrate the highest sense of love and patriotism for the nation, while pursuing their ambitions. He said, “As we prepare to exercise our democratic rights in less than four weeks from now, let us remind ourselves that only the military and the security agencies cannot give us peace, before, during and after the general elections. “We the political leaders should take responsibility of calling our people to order, and ensuring that the right message is sent. I call on all strata of society to collaborate and cooperate with the security agencies to ensure that those who do not mean well are fished out early enough before they cause any havoc. High point of the event was the laying of wreath by Governor Seriake Dickson, Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Konbowei Benson, Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri, Chairman of Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Chairman Bayelsa State Chapter of Nigerian Legion, Elder Igirigi Effiom, and Commanding Officers among others.
