15/06/13 match report by Admin – SWGB Chatham Cup – Rd 3 Bay Olympic (1) 5 (Maksim Manko 2, Kyosake Kitano 2, Chad Coombes) East Coast Bays (1) 1 (Joe Bresnahan) Thankfully, the rain stayed away, and the pitch looked in reasonable condition. East Coast Bays kicked off the game facing the North goal. It was the home side who took the initiative in the opening part of the first half. The first chance came when Chad Coombes curled a free kick wide of the Western post from just outside the area on the Eastern side of the pitch. 1-0: we take the lead after a long throw from Eastern flank is not cleared by the visitor’s defence. A couple of passes found Maksism Manko just inside the penalty area. Despite having his back to the goal, he was given time to control the ball and time to turn to place a shot. His low shot went past the diving keeper into the opposite Western corner of the net. We then had a series of chances to increase our one goal lead. First, a loose ball was picked up Chad Coombes after a move towards the visitors goal fell through. Unfortunately, his shot from outside the penalty area went wide of the Western post. Next up, Kyosake Kitano tried a long shot from outside the area on the Eastern side of the pitch. The shot kept going, assisted by the wind, but luckily for our opponents it did not change direction and dip into the back of the net. Finally, a Craig Wylie free kick from the Western side, just outside the front of the penalty area, curled over the goal. East Coast Bays were now coming back into the game. Joe Bresnahan missed an open goal when he headed over at the Western post after a cross from the Eastern flank found him unmarked. Roy Bell in our goal was starting to be pressured by long throws and corners. 1-1: the visitor’s efforts paid off when a Chad Cooombes hand ball just inside the penalty area presented them with a penalty. Although, Joe Bresnahan had his penalty saved by Roy Bell to his right, he had the presence of mind to score from the rebound by placing the loose ball into the Eastern side of the net. So the scores were locked at half time. Would we rue the opportunity not to make a two goal lead? To the second half….. 2-1: the answer was a no as were profiting from corners. They had been troubling David Ellensohn in the visitors goal. This time round, we had won a corner after a Daniel Jones run into area on the Western flank and cross. From the resulting corner, the ball found the hand of Kris Carpenter near the Western post, not that the East Coast Bays players and supporters would support this view. Maksim Manko calmly scored from the resulting spot kick. How calm? The kick went in off the Eastern post. 3-1: soon we were two goals up on the score board. A lovely deep cross from the Eastern flank found Kyosake Kitano at the far post. Somehow, he climbed up enough to head the ball home. A nice, determined finish which proves he can do more than his traditional flying side volley….. The next significant moment if the game came when the visitors went down to 10 men after Joe Bresnahan fouled Chad Coombes in the middle of the pitch. A second yellow card resulted in a red card. It is kind of ironic as our captain, Craig Wylie, was also sent off for two yellow cards against the Bays in a league game earlier this season at the same venue. Looking to increase the pressure, we almost increased the lead further as Maksim Manko glanced a header wide of Eastern post. The cross came from the Western flank by Craig Wylie after a getting a pass from a free kick in the middle of the pitch, and then setting off a run down the flank. To keep the pace up, Yoji Tanabe came on as sub to add some fresh legs into the game…..at this stage, I feel foolish as I had retired him too early with my earlier postings….so, I will not write off this guy until he does decide to hang up his boots. 4-1: the extra man and the visitor’s heads are dropping, so it is not a surprise that we do eventually increase the goals margin. A one-two move worked Chad Coombes into the Western side of the penalty area. He kept his composure as he slid the ball past the advancing dive of the keeper into the Eastern side of the net. A nice, clinical finish. A few minutes later, Byron Paulus comes close with a shot just over the top of the goal. 5-1: it soon becomes five for the home team. Byron Paulus breaks away just inside the visitor’s half, and he has the vision to look up for options when faced with a wall of defensive players. He spotted Kyosake Kitano on the Western flank. On receiving the ball, Mr. Kitano motors into the penalty area and hits a low shot to beat the keeper at the near post. Another good move results in a good goal. The final chance sees Maksim Manko shoot just wide of the Western post in search for his hat trick goal. Bad luck to Max on that front, but if he keeps this form up, I am sure it will happen….opponents have been warned. So, a good cup win for us, and the impact of the returning players is clear to see. The Cup is now shaping up to be a good opportunity for silverware this season, but there are still some good teams left in the competition. We may also need to overcome our Central League hoodoo if we make it through the next couple of rounds. I guess the question that ECB supporters will raise is whether the sending off changed the game? Well, yes, on one level in terms of the physical numbers on the pitch. On the other hand, a bit like last weekend, the Bay Olympic team finished the stronger and probably would have won the Cup tie, albeit with a smaller margin. Till next week…..
