15 Years ago today, on 5 May 1999, Portugal, Indonesia and the United nations signed the Trilateral Accord, which established the timeline for a Referendum to be held in Timor-Leste. The question to be put to the people living in the territory was whether the people would accept an antonym government option and remain a part of the Republic of Indonesia. The door for the restoration of our national independence was thus slightly opened, never to be shut!!!! Portugal as the lawful administrator under international law up unit, that time, with the United Nations to sponsor and supervise the referendum (public consultation as it became known). Without this Accord, we might still have been under Indonesian illegal Occupation….in the eyes of international law.
