150 YEARS AGO: ELECTRONIC VOTING. “VOTING BY ELECTRICITY. — A very curious scheme has been proposed to the French Legislature, by which the members would be enabled to vote by electricity. Each member by pressing upon a white or black key near his seat would put in motion an electrical apparatus, which would record the vote immediately upon an indicating table by the Presidents chair. The names of all the members are marked upon the table, and a black or white disc, according to the color or the key worked, shows the side on which each member has voted. Other parts of the apparatus enable the President to stop the voting and show the total result, which is calculated mechanically. Secret votes may be recorded, it seems, by an arrangement which allows the voter to move the indicator to the name of another member. The apparatus has been tried experimentally at the Luxembourg and appears to have been noticed with favor.” Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 27, Number 4175, 8 August 1864
