150 years ago today, Confederate infantry of the Third Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia approached a small, sleepy town in Pennsylvania. Upon encountering Union cavalry to the northwest of the town, these soldiers fall back as they are under orders not to engage the enemy. Their commander, Henry Heth, confers with his superior, A.P. Hill. They decide that Heth should brush aside the small force to their front and take control of the town tomorrow. That force is actually a full division of cavalry under the command of Union general John Buford. Buford has noted two important features of the area. Twelve roads converge in this town, making it ideal to concentrate an army. Also, the high, rocky terrain of the countryside make it perfect for defense. Buford decides to aggressively hold this town and sends messages to his own superiors to bring the Union Army of the Potomac to this place as quickly as possible. Tomorrow will be the first day of July. The place is Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
