15th November. 1st Convention of Bamboo Workers in Vidarbha organised by Shramik Elgar at Chandrapur. Convention addressed by renowned economist Dr. Shrinivas Khandewale, Chief Conservator of Forest Chandrapur Mr. Sanjay Thakre, Vijay Sidhawar, Chhaya Sidam, Gajanan Atram, Premilatai and several others. I was honoured to chair the convention. Nine important resolutions were passed including 1. Green bamboo should be available free of cost to traditional bamboo weavers 2. A corporation (mahamandal) should be formed to ensure socio-economic development of workers 3. Old age pension to the bamboo workers 4. Forest department should provide land for bamboo plantation. 5. Government should ensure training for skill development in new technologies. 6. Registration of all bamboo workers and issue of bamboo card at the village level through joint forest management committees. 7. Government should set up Forest University in East Vidarbha. 8. The offences registered against bamboo workers should be withdrawn by forest department. 9. Government should provide financial and marketing assistance to bamboo workers. Bamboo workers from Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gadchiroli and Gondiya attended the convention. Yesterday I communicated the proceedings to Honble Shri. Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister for Forest, Government of Maharashtra. He has assured that above resolutions will be included in Maharashtras new Bamboo policy.
