16 Aug 2013 -- On this day in... 1954 – James Cameron, screenwriter, producer/director, was born on this day at Kapuskasing; raised in Chippawa, a suburb of Niagara Falls. 1930 -- First British Empire Games held at Hamilton; now called the Commonwealth Games 1858 -- Assembly of the Province of Canada charters a Bank of Canada; abolishes imprisonment for debt. 1846 -- Toronto Ontario- Founding of the Provincial Agricultural Association and the Board of Agriculture for Canada West; precursor of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) board. 1827 -- Otawa Ontario- Admiral John Franklin lays first stone of Rideau Canal locks in Ottawa on his return down the Ottawa River from the Arctic. 1812 -- General Isaac Brock 1769-1812 captures Detroit and the Michigan territory with 400 troops and 300 militia from York and Niagara, and with the aid of Tecumseh and 600 Indians 1665 -- Two stallions and twelve mares sent by Louis XIV to start a new breed of horses arrived in New France. The Canadian Horse was developed from these and additional horses sent by France, and still exists. Nickname: the little iron horse.
