16 Dec 2014 - A broad trough and weak frontal system extending out - TopicsExpress

16 Dec 2014 - A broad trough and weak frontal system extending out of a 981 Gulf of Alaska low is moving onto the BC coast this morning. This weak system will produce rain and Gale Force southeasterlies around the west coast and northern Vancouver Island today. Overcast skies and intermittent showers will dominate the inner south coast throughout the day with more organized rain tonight. A 1022 mb high remains lodged over the BC interior and continues to produce outflow conditions through the mainland inlets and Juan de Fuca Strait. The northeast and easterly offshore flow should gradually ease today as the trough moves over the coastal area. Enough of an outflow will remain this morning to provide dry surface air, further weakening the advancing trough. The Polar jet remains split with the stronger stream pushing through California. This means the first of three advancing frontal systems will likely split and deliver cloud with intermittent showers again on Wednesday, preceded by a short period of clearing. By Thursday the jet will have moved more northward and become consolidated opening the door to a strong frontal system by late Thursday and an even stronger system by Saturday afternoon, overnight into Sunday. Timing is a little unsure at this time but it is looking like both systems are picking up sub-tropical moisture which will energize them to deep low storms. There is a possible game changer brewing in the tropics identified on the Pacific Water Vapour satellite image.
