16 POM BABIES BORN By Genesis KETAN In the Nation’s Capital at the Port Moresby General Hospital Labour ward, there were 16 New Year babies born so far from midnight until 8AM to usher in 2015. According to a sister on duty, this was a pretty busy period with many expectant mothers coming in to deliver on New Year’s Eve. There were even cases where mothers had to be discharged and the labour ward and ward 11 respectively were quite full to capacity with some having to be discharged and sent home. The first baby was born at 12.25 AM from the Southern region and the heaviest baby thus far weighing 4.2kg from the Highlands region, born at 2:55 AM. Overall, despite the shortage of manpower in the labour ward, New Year babies were delivered through good effort from on duty sisters and doctors, with little complications and both mother and babies doing well.
