160-yr-old telegram service to end today Jul 14, 12:18 PM Today is the last day for making telegrams. The government has decided to disband the over 160-year-old telegram service in the country from tomorrow. People can send telegrahic messages till 9 PM today. Talking to AIR in New Delhi, BSNL Chairman R K Upadhyay said the facility is closed as there is no demand for the service. He said this is due to the availability of faster alternative means of communication facilities like mobile phones, SMS, internet and e-mail. AIR Correspondent reports that the State-run telecom firm BSNL has decided to discontinue the service due to a huge shortfall in revenue. The first experimental electric telegraph line was started between Kolkata and Diamond Harbour in 1850 and it was opened for use by the East India Company in 1851. The service was made available to the public in 1854. There are about 75 telegram centres in the country.
