16th June 1917 - L48 was one of four Zeppelins that took off on this night to attack targets in London but the crew did not realise the compass had failed and they were drifting north. Their altitude was so high that antiaircraft shells or fighters could not hit it. However, as dawn approached, the captain tried to descend in order to pick up faster winds to escape but the fighters attacked again and hit it. It ignited and fell out of the sky. 3 of the crew escaped and jumped out as the gondola hit the ground but had to then watch their fellow crew burn. The frame survived and was seen by many people before it was removed. Read more here. (ES) museums.norfolk.gov.uk/view/NCC095954
