170 rockets were shot into Israel yesterday, resulting in no casualties and one house damaged. Israel attacked over 60 target in Gaza and assassinated (or failed in an attempt to assassinate the leader of Hamass military wing. Sooner rather than later, Hamas will have shot all its stock and will have to sue for a cease-fire, leaving it bereft of means in monetary, political and military means. Its endeavors so far have inflicted very little direct damage on Israel, although the relative disruption of life has affected our economy. But this is all short term. In the longer run, Hamas will have been weakened and will not have made any gains through this present round of violence. Qatar’s role has been baneful.Egypt and the Palestinian Authority are endeavoring to gain from Hamass weakened position and the larger part of the Arab world is in silent support of Israel punitive measures against Hamas, hoping for its demise or, at least, meaningful weakening. My hope and prayer is that our Government will take advantage of the situation and make a serious effort at coming to an agreement with the Palestinian Authority that will either establish or ultimately lead to a cessation of hostilities and perhaps peace. Suffering, particularly on the Palestinian side, is enormous and totally unnecessary.
