17th of September 1999. Friday Overall, I do believe Rome was my only port of call which made me really happy. All the other destinations have been quite disappointing. Am I being a little unfair? Most everyone has at least attempted to show me a good time. Although I sense there is a magical ingredient missing. A certain spark when mixed with the smallest gathering guarantees a wonderful time. Am I being a little cynical? Besides, the tourists have gone. There is no atmosphere, no mingling of crowds, the laughter of people, mad shopping, conversing of foreign languages. Now there is only the islanders who live her all year. They remain to clean up the mess left behind by the celebrating crowds and prepare for the next summer. The earthquake which shuttered parts of Turkey recently has surely touched Greece also. In Athens, replete with her multi story apartment blocks one hundred people died. Cleaning up the debris left from collapsed buildings will take a long time. But what about the victims? Those left homeless, without shelter, without food, without hope? What will happen to them and who will help them?
